Trifle

Three comics keen to celebrate stand-up comedy as a joyfully experimental form that is incredibly important and totally disposable at the same time. To do so, they leave traditional roles of the comic at the door.
MC-less, meandering and resolutely uncompetitive, the show’s format challenges stand up’s existing structures and accessibility. Who gets to say what, how and in what order? Everyone thinks they know stand up whether they’ve seen a Michael McCintyre DVD or spent a month in the dive bars of The Edinburgh Festival, but the essence of the art form feels elusive. It can’t just be about standing up and being funny, can it? In Trifle, three friends try to find answers by being seriously daft (or daftly serious)?
If that all sounds too pretentious, actual trifle might also get a mention.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Trifle

Mike Carter, writer & performer, first did stand-up in the 1990s at the now legendary Underworld Night Club while at Bradford University. He then promptly took a 16 year break to return, chastened but none the wiser, with a series of gigs at The Brockley Jack Theatre, Bread & Roses Theatre and The Space Arts Centre. Primarily a stage writer and dramaturg, he is Literary Manager at the latter venue.
Bethany Sharp grew up in Essex and Suffolk, and is now based in London. She was educated at a girls’ school in the middle of nowhere for thirteen years. Whilst there, she won yearly awards for ‘Effort’, though never for ‘Achievement’, which has made her the optimist she is today. In 2010 she escaped and has been working in theatre ever since. Mainly as a producer, but also as a writer, director, actor, administrator and script reader. Her digital audio theatre company, Frequency Theatre, has released ninety new plays by writers in the UK and internationally. She has studied Clown with Philippe Gaulier, Dramatugy with the Royal Court, and owes much of her theatre training and early employment to the Mercury Theatre Colchester. Bethany is currently Creative Producer at the Space Theatre. In 2016, Bethany gained a BA in Philosophy and Theology from Heythrop College, University of London. As a result of her spiritual studies, Bethany decided to become a comedian. She performed regularly, including at corporate events for women in industry, until 2020. After a three year gap, Bethany has moved away from traditional stand-up into experimental musical comedy, as she never knew she would.
Christopher Ryan, comedian and improviser, first signed up for an ‘Intro to impro’ class to help him gain confidence at work. He discovered a love for performing and the confidence to totally ignore his career. Christopher has trained in improvisation with the Spontaneity Shop, Free Association and Second City and in clowning with Dr Brown, Mick Barnfather and Viggo Venn.
